One of Liverpool’s most celebrated independent culinary institutions has officially arrived in the heart of the city centre. The team behind the multi-award-winning The Tavern Co on Smithdown Road is proud to announce that its vibrant new concept, Tavern Co Social, is now open to the public on Water Street.
Taking over the prominent ground-floor site inside the historic New Zealand House—the former home of Hooters and the legendary Newz Bar—the venue brings fresh, modern energy to one of the city’s most iconic streets.
For over three decades, The Tavern Co has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s independent food scene, twice named the home of the “UK’s Best Breakfast” for its legendary full English and American-style morning spreads. Now, the brand brings its community-focused ethos, massive reputation, and famous flavours to a wider city-centre audience.
Tavern Co Social seamlessly blends the nostalgic, welcoming charm of the original Wavertree landmark with a high-energy, modern social space. By day, guests can enjoy the iconic breakfast and brunch menus that built the brand’s cult following. As evening approaches, the 120-cover venue transitions into an intimate, lively social hub featuring a specialized tapas menu, craft beers, hearty dishes, and a dedicated setup for sports enthusiasts.
The space features a sleek, contemporary interior anchored by an expansive main bar, complete with over 10 TVs positioned throughout the venue so sports fans can catch every major event from plush booths or right at the bar.
This expansion marks a massive milestone for the brand under its new ownership group, which has invested heavily in modernising and securing the future of the flagship South Liverpool site since 2023. This second location represents a major vote of confidence in Liverpool’s bustling commercial district and daytime hospitality market.

Tavern Co Social opens on Friday 18th September, operating daily from 8:00 AM.
Opening Times:
Sunday to Thursday 8am until 10pm.
Friday and Saturday 8am until Midnight.
